What PeekDrive does
PeekDrive is a browser extension that lets you search inside your Google Drive files, preview the matching passages and open a file at the right spot.
Google data PeekDrive accesses
With the read-only access to Google Drive that you grant, PeekDrive reads:
- The names, types, modification dates, IDs and links of your files, to list the results
- The display name of each file’s owner, shown in the results
- The names of parent folders and shared drives, to show where each file is located
- The content of your files, downloaded on the fly into your browser to find and show the matching passage, and to confirm that a file really contains your search
This data is never saved, and it is never sent anywhere: it only travels between your browser and Google.
On Google Drive, while you type in Drive’s own search box, PeekDrive reads that text to show it in its “Search for "…" inside your Drive files” row, directly on the page. The text is passed to the PeekDrive panel only when you click that row, and is then kept in memory for the current browsing session only.
When you click “Open”, your search term (never the content of your files) is copied to your clipboard, so you can find it in the document. PeekDrive then looks for the passage in the page of the opened file, to scroll to it and highlight it; nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
No PeekDrive server
PeekDrive has no server. Your searches and your files only travel between your browser and Google, over encrypted HTTPS connections to Google’s official APIs. Everything else (finding the passages, building the previews) happens locally in your browser.
PeekDrive:
- Does not send your data to any server other than Google’s
- Does not use analytics, tracking or telemetry, and sets no cookies
- Does not use artificial intelligence: no AI reads your documents
- Does not sell or share any data with third parties, and no human reads your data
- Does not use your data for advertising or to train AI models
What is stored, and for how long
The content of your files is read on the fly for each search and is never saved. PeekDrive keeps no search history: only your last search is kept, in memory and for the current browsing session only, so it is still there when you reopen the panel. Your Google access token is kept in memory only and is never written to disk. The only things saved in your browser are your settings (search mode, language, sort order, show file location) and the size and position of the PeekDrive panel: no Google data.
Google API usage
PeekDrive requests read-only access to your Google Drive, in order to search your files and read their content. It cannot modify, move, share, create or delete anything in your Drive. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files are opened directly in your browser.
PeekDrive’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy and the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
In particular, PeekDrive does not use Google data for advertising, does not transfer it to data brokers or information resellers, does not use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes, and no human reads it.
Removing access and deleting data
You can remove PeekDrive’s access to your Google account at any time from myaccount.google.com/permissions, and uninstall the extension from chrome://extensions. Uninstalling erases your settings. PeekDrive stores nothing on any server, so there is nothing to delete on our side. For any question or request, write to contact@peekdrive.com.
